Apparitions

This is a very odd series that requires a lot of you as a viewer. My guess is that most will not make it through all six episodes. That is a pity, because “Apparitions” is not a TV series with sequential episodes but one long story, told in six parts. And, taken as what it is, it’s one of the best such stories ever told.I don’t much *like* the kind of story it is, but I understand it. It’s *very* much like William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist” and “The Ninth Configuration.” Those were Catholic stories, too, about the question of faith, and the questioning of faith. But all three fall into a genre I would call “religious emotional drama queen fiction.” That genre is about writers trying to manipulate audiences by showing them over-the-top miracle and possession stories to push their buttons and get them to associate those pushed emotional buttons with having had some kind of religious epiphany.Ordinary life and ordinary questioning of faith aren’t *enough* for these writers. They have to “paint large,” and can seemingly only believe in God or attempt to sway others into believing in God by creating larger-than-life situations based in conflict between good and evil, personified as a conflict between the man of faith and Satan. Such stories are IMO the spiritual equivalent of sappy romance fiction and manipulative emotional tearjerkers. There is little about them that could be described as “subtle.” That said, I think that “Apparitions” is pretty *good* religious emotional drama queen fiction. It is FAR better than Blatty’s “The Exorcist,” and FAR more intelligent. The cast is excellent and the writing more so. But it’s still religion dressed up like Carmen Miranda. I prefer subtler stuff.

Three Day Weekend

Was there ever even a screenplay? Much less a credible screenwriter?What a waste of some reasonably decent acting talent to put them in front of a camera and give them absolutely nothing to do. Irrespective of how many “meaningful” and heart-warming tunes you embed beneath your “dialogue,” you need a foundation of a story that at least has a modicum of substance . Or at the least, hints at it. Other than male nudity that is as “coy” as is the presumed “plot.”A shame, indeed. This director (/screenwriter) actually produced a far better product with his “Long Term Relationship.” It’s hard to believe that this vacuum of a film came from the same man.Possible spoiler: The only reason I gave it a two is because of the somewhat cute turn when the hustler arrives and was recognized by many others. That was the only element that caught my attention and gave me a moment (albeit fleeting) of hope that this flick might develop into something worth the time. Not.

This is a slow and sentimental mood piece, the story of a love affair between a man and a woman in Italy before World War II. The man we discover is married with a child. This is not the kind of film where the viewer can expect a lot to happen. This is a film for people who enjoy seeing attractive lovers together and who like to listen to the romantic strains of an orchestral score with a lot of stringed instruments. It is a sad BRIEF ENCOUNTER sort of film except that the encounter is not really brief.

The Crew

I really do dream of a better time for British cinema. This film is a glimpse of what could be. This film like all good movies focus’ on a good story line, actors in roles they suit and a good pace for its style. A simmering tension through the main characters crumbling self confidence. The edge comes from some brutal violence thrown into boil. Added with the right taste, again for the type of movie it is. Along with a dash of hot lesbian action, a couple of twists and a quintessential scouse feel. Usually i think scousers get a bad representation as comedy or annoying characters but this time everyone one had a natural feel to them. In summary i would highly recommend it to any man and their dog, especially the dog.
