The Broken
“The Brken” does have its moments. The atmosphere is eerie throughout. The stage design is sparse and somewhat bleak, which is fitting with the movie’s general theme.The problem is that there is too little story here. The writer/director Sean Ellis tries to solve this problem with short intercut scenes and unsettling movie. At first it works and you’re intrigued, but at some point it just seems as if Ellis was beating a dead horse. It’s like: “Yeah, we’ve seen these flashbacks, now could you PLEASE go on with the story.”And what is the story anyway? We never find out. Why is there a psychiatrist in the movie? Why are the characters introduced so long, when their relations never amount to anything?”The Brken” seems like an underdevelopped idea and the ending is rather predictable. It’s not a complete waste of time, but in the end it’s pretty much pointless.

Eastbound and Down
The collaborators behind The Foot Fist Way and Observe & Report made this television miniseries for HBO earlier this year. It’s very much like their two films, but it’s definitely their most satisfying work. That’s mostly because it’s consistently funny. The films are frequently hilarious, but get bogged down in some heavily dramatic moments. And they also have a lot of jokes that fail. The six episode show plays like a 2 1/2 hour movie, although the individual episodes are very much structured like television. Danny McBride stars as a John Rocker-like former baseball star named Kenny Powers. He came to fame during a World Series final game and was enormously popular. But between his bad behavior and diminishing results, and passing through about ten MLB teams, he’s been kicked out and now he’s broke. He returns to his North Carolina hometown and shacks up with his brother, who is married with three children. The only job he can get is as a substitute gym teacher at a local middle school (the teacher for whom he is substituting ends up dying at the end of the first episode, allowing him to become a real part of the faculty). Having tasted so much fame, Kenny is not at all happy at where he is landed. In his mind, some light training will get him back into the enormous leagues. Meanwhile, he can treat everyone around him like crap and pursue his now engaged high school sweetheart, who teaches art at the school. Like the two films, Eastbound and Down mines a very painful existence. It’s mean and misanthropic. I learned to see Kenny Powers as a human being, but he sure as Hell is a repugnant one. It’s hard to believe that anyone would give this guy the time of day. You’d think the former girlfriend would tell his to screw off, his boss would fire him and even his brother would disown him. Oh well, it’s fiction, after all. Not everything has to be believable (unlike Observe & Report, there’re no hints that any of the story is taking place within the character’s mind). I wish I could come up with some lines from the show to prove how funny it can be, but IMDb is pretty useless so far. I probably wouldn’t be able to post them here, anyway. The show is ridiculously profane. Fans generally refer to the protagonist as Kenny “F’ing” Powers (as Kenny Powers often does himself). Will Ferrel appears in a couple of episodes, but his over-the-top style clashes a bit with the more naturalistic style of the show. Craig Robinson also appears, and works a lot better. Besides Jody Hill, art-house (and Pineapple Express) director David Gordon Green directs. I hope Green sticks with comedy at least in half his career. I’ve never been a fan of his art-house hits (or non-hits; I don’t think any of them have been commercially successful), but his comic style works brilliantly.

Up for the award for weirdest film I’ve seen in quite a while. You don’t believe me? Okay, the plot revolves around Dick, who seems to have no friends at all and who lives in a small, nameless town in America that is totally centred on working in the mine. He buys a toy gun as a present for someone he doesn’t like, but doesn’t give it to him. Eventually he discovers that the gun isn’t a toy at all, its real. He falls pretty much in love with this gun, names it Wendy, and forms a type of gang; The Dandies, who are pacifists although they do love their weapons.Obviously, things do not work out well.The whole style of the film is strange. Virtually all of it is narration, which is then developed in a few conversations or, and for the most part, shown and illustrated through what we see occur. It is also rather on the surreal side. I don’t mean melting watches or anything, just, well surreal.And I really liked it. The detached position the audience is placed in by not being able to engage with any of the characters except through the letters Dick writes/narrates. And the very fact that we’re never quite sure what the film is about. Is it anti-gun, or just anti the culture that seems to love guns and violence yet wants to hide it away? Or is it a praise of their idealism? And lets not forget the humour. If you can’t laugh at this film I don’t think you’ll enjoy it.

I went into this film with no expectations whatsoever. I had a very vague idea of what the story was. And while I enjoyed the film, it is plagued by mediocrity at every turn, so much so that by the end, you are almost taken completely out of the film, because you’re tired of waiting for it to get good.The biggest problem lies in the script. The characters are all one-dimensional. At no point do we feel like we know anything about anyone. This is frustrating in a film that wants us to be scared. We can’t be scared if we don’t identify with our characters. The dialogue is also inane and incredibly bland. There isn’t a single flair of writerly wit in the entire script. Every exchange feels as if it was rushed through by the writer, never developing the dialogue beyond the purpose of getting from A to B.Speaking of bland, the visual style of the film is very bleak and one-note. The film sports a dull gray look, that borders on black and white, throughout the entire film. It gets very boring to look at. All of the lighting schemes were flat and without any kind of flair as well. The shots are just as boring. I don’t think there is a single outstanding piece of cinematography in the entire film. Everything is very by the book, and like so much of the film, bland and mediocre.Before I jump into the performances, I want to say that none of the actors are bad. They did not have first class material to work with, but at the same time, no one seems overly dedicated to their roles. Each person seems to have only a basic understanding of their character. No one does anything special in their performance. Like the dialogue and the visual style, it is all very one-dimensional. This film would have benefited from using well-known actors. Since we don’t get to know them in the story, it would have been helpful if thew audience knew them before the film even started. This is a sentiment that is inevitable with known actors.Oh, I have forgotten to say what the film does well. The special effects are quite good. There is gore that will make you gag and occurrences that will shock you. For such an obviously low-budget film, these are effects that would make Hollywood proud.Overall, there is nothing bad about this film. It has some great ideas, and it is good at its core, but it does nothing great. It barely does anything good. It is proficient. It is mediocre. It is just another example of the lack of Justice we have come to expect from adaptations of Clive Barker’s material.
